RHODE ISLAND VS. MASSACHUSETTS - SERIES NOTES

  • Saturday will be the 89th meeting all time between Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with the Minutemen holding a 48-37-3 advantage.
  • The series dates all the way back to Oct. 14, 1903 when UMass defeated the Rams 46-0.
  • Despite a long history, the teams have not played each other since 2011, the year UMass began to transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
  • Massachusetts won the last meeting, 36-27, on Sept. 17, 2011.
  • Rhode Island last defeated Massachusetts on Nov. 20, 2010 in a 37-34 contest.
  • Before UMass made the move to the FBS, Rhody and the Minutemen competed against each other in 67 consecutive seasons from 1946 through 2011.
  • The rivalry included games in CAA Football (2007-11), the Atlantic 10 (1997-2006) and the Yankee Conference (1947-1996).
  • Both teams are looking to snap skids. Rhode Island has dropped three straight, while UMass has lost two in a row and 18 of 19 overall dating back to 2019.

  • Goldstein, a former kicker at UMass, is the husband of new URI softball coach Whitney Goldstein.

DEFENSE DISRUPTING THE PASSING GAME

  • Rhode Island's defense recorded a season-high nine pass break ups last week against Maine.
  • The Rams now have 38 PBUs on the season.
  • With three games remaining, Rhode Island is two PBUs away from cracking the program top 10 for a single season.
  • The 38 break ups are the most by the team since 2017, when URI had 49 as a team.
  • The program record is 53, set in 1984.
  • Linebacker Evan Stewart leads the team with six pass break ups, while safeties Henry Yianakopolos and Coby Tippett have five each.
  • Linebacker Jarrett Martin and cornerbacks Antonio Carter, Jr. and Jordan Jones all have four break ups.

  • Davis had 256 points and a program record 42 rushing touchdowns from 2002-05.
  • Carrick enters this weekend with 251 points.
  • Carrick holds the URI records for career field goals (41) and career extra points (128).
  • Twice this year he has six extra points in a game, doing so against Bryant and at Brown.
  • He has six games with 6+ extra points.
