How it Happened
A pair of first-half goals by UConn led the Huskies over Rhode Island Sunday.
The Huskies (1-0-0) opened the game and struck immediately, getting on the board 1-0 at the four minute mark. UConn took advantage of a Ram turnover as Yamilee Eveillard found Kess Elmore who crossed a shot in the lower right corner of the box. The Huskies doubled their lead with a goal from Lucy Cappadona, assisted by Jaydah Bedoya and Jessica Mazo. The Rams were unable to get any shots in the first 45, and went into the break scoreless, down 2-0.
In the second half, a strong defense by the Rams (0-2-0) held the Huskies from extending their lead. After taking seven shots in the first half, Rhody held UConn to just four in the second period of play. Freshman Francesca D'agostino was able to get a shot on the frame in the 78th minute, but it wasn't enough as time expired.
