Softball Loses Twice to Stony Brook

How It Happened
Rhode Island (0-6) remained winless as it lost both ends of a doubleheader to Stony Brook (7-3) Saturday. The Rams fell 7-3 and 7-1 in the two games, which were hosted at James Madison's Veteran's Memorial Park.

Game 1 – Stony Brook 7, Rhode Island 3
Stony Brook pitcher Dawn Bodrug was dominant, retiring the first 17 batters she faced. She struck out the first six batters of the game, and she finished with 13 total punchouts.

She got all the run support she needed four batters into the home half of the first. A pair of singled sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases for Nicole McCarvill, who drew a walk. A groundout by Jordyn Nowakowsk brought in a second run, and Alina Lance delivered a two-run single to make the score 4-0.

Three more runs for the Seawolves in the bottom of the second broke the game open and put Rhody in a 7-0 hole.

Rhody got on the board in the top of the sixth when Skyler Rapuano reached on a bunt single. Sami Villarreal followed with a double down the left field line to bring Rapuano around to score. A two-run homer by Alex Pleasic in the seventh inning closed the gap.

Game 2 – Stony Brook 11, Rhode Island 6
The second game was more competitive. A tight game through the first five innings, Stony Brook was up 3-0 before Rhody got on the scoreboard with an RBI single from Sami Villarreal in the fifth. The Seawolves scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open.

However, the Rams did not go away quietly, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Ari Castillo started the rally with a double, and one out later Alex Pleasic doubled to drive in pinch runner Cassie Swenson. Vicki Viaclovsky reached on an infield single, and Susan Harrison cleared the bases with a three-run shot to get URI back within 7-5.

Stony Brook came right back in the top of the seventh with a two-run double and a two-run home run, squelching any thoughts of a late comeback for Rhode Island.
