How it Happened
Rhode Island picked up its second point in as many matches, playing Saint Joseph's to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon.
Saint Joseph's got on the board in the 20th minute when Rhode Island was called for a hand ball in the box. Aleksa Peev went upper right 90 on the penalty kick, burying the shot for an early 1-0 lead.
Rhode Island scored its first goal of the season in the 39th minute to tie the match.
Aysha Bentick corralled the ball in the corner and sent a low cross from left to right.
Haley Pignatelli got her foot on the pass and beat keeper Rivera to her left. Rivera got her hand on the shot, but it had too much pace for her and found the back of the net.
Teresa Morrissey came up with a save in the 74th minute to keep the match tied. Ashley Orendac controlled a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a hard, point blank shot. Morrissey shut the attempt down, keeping Rhody even. A couple minutes later, Morrissey was caught out of the box as Sofia Filippo put a shot on net, but the Rhody defense was able to knock the shot away.
Morrissey came up with three saves in overtime. In the 97th minute, Peev had a solid opportunity for Saint Joseph's, getting off a hard shot from the right side of the box. Morrissey smothered it. Two minutes into the second overtime, Filippo took a through pass down the right side and had a 1-on-1 opportunity, but Morrissey made the stop. Peev got a shot on goal less than a minute later, but again Morrissey was there, salvaging the tie for her side.
