Rams Fight Back, but Fall to UConn, 10-7

How It Happened
Rhode Island fought back from a rough second inning, but ultimately the Rams came up just short in a 10-7 loss to Connecticut Wednesday afternoon.

UConn (7-9) built an early 9-0 lead, taking advantage of several Rhode Island errors. Of the first nine runs scored by the Huskies, all were scored after two outs, and eight of the nine runs were unearned. The Rams (0-9) struggled in the field, committing five errors in the first three frames.

Despite the big hole, Rhody chipped away. Ari Castillo launched a two-run home run high off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. In the fifth inning, Rhody loaded the bases with one out. Erica Robles was robbed of extra bases when Ashley Etsy may a diving catch down the left field line. The play did result in a sacrifice fly that drove in Cassie Swenson, cutting the deficit to 9-3.

UConn got yet another unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to move up, 10-3. However, URI continued to fight in the bottom of the seventh, eventually bringing the tying run to the plate.

Swenson started the last at bat by reaching on an error. Sami Villarreal followed with a walk, and with one out, Castillo singled up the middle to load the bases. Robles followed with a single of her own, driving in Swenson and Villarreal to make it 10-5. With two out, Susan Harrison worked a walk to reload the bases for pinch hitter Hannah DeSousa, who lined a double to right field. Castillo and pinch runner Margaux Lesser scored, making it a three-run game, 10-7.

With two runners in scoring position, Caileigh Holland sent a long fly to the gap in left center. However, centerfielder Aziah James tracked the ball down on the warning track, bringing an end to the contest.
