How it Happened
Rhode Island dropped its conference opener Saturday, falling to Massachusetts 5-2.
UMass got on the scoreboard quick, striking first behind a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes from Alec Hughes. Rhody answered with a shot that found the back of the net by Zach Drayer, but the Minutemen added to their advantage to go into the break up 3-1 off a goal by Tyler Mann.Â
The Minutemen started the second half of play and scored two more goals in the opening 12 minutes, thanks to shots from Filippo Begliardi Ghidini and Graham Brenner. Rhody's Kevin Castaneda had his first career goal in the 68th minute, but it wasn't enough for the Rams en route to their first conference loss.
