How it Happened
Massachusetts was able to knock home a shot in the 101st minute to beat Rhode Island 1-0 on a cold, windy and rainy afternoon Sunday.
Sophomore Olivia Gouldsbury was able to collect a cross from classmate Serena Ahmed. Ahmed sent the ball from the left corner, and Gouldbury snuck a shot over the head of Rhode Island keeper
Teresa Morrissey to end the contest.
Neither side generated many serious threats on net, as the play was slick thanks to the driving rain. The best chance for Rhode Island came in the 24th minute A nice through ball set up
Claire Ross with a 1-on-1 breakaway. Ross took the ball into the right side of the box and sent a low hard shot to the left of UMass keeper Bella Mendoza. The diving Mendoza was able to tip the shot just wide outside the right post, keeping the Rams off the scoreboard.
