How it Happened
Rhode Island Rhode Island (17-16-1, 5-3 Atlantic 10) picked up a pair of key Atlantic 10 victories with a sweep of Massachusetts (9-24, 1-11 A-10) Saturday afternoon. By sweeping the Minutemen by scores of 7-3 and 10-8, URI took three out of four in the weekend series.
Game 1 – Rhode Island 7, Massachusetts 3 (7 inn.)           Â
A steady offensive attack gave Rhody starter
Mike Webb plenty of support.
Alex Ramirez had four runs batted in and scored two more to lead the Rams, while
Calvin McCall and
Addison Kopack each had two hits.
Webb (4-0) went the distance for the victory, allowing three runs on six hits. By the time UMass scored twice in the top of the sixth inning, URI had already built a six-run advantage. The lead was never truly in doubt as Rhode Island won the opener.
Game 2 – Rhode Island 10, Massachusetts 8
Trailing 7-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, Rhode Island rallied for six runs to spark the team to the win.
Greg Cavaliere started the outburst with a one-out single, and
Sonny Ulliana reached on an error.
Xavier Vargas followed with a single to right field to bring Cavaliere around with the first run.
Addison Kopack made it 7-6 with a two-run triple to right field.
Jordan Laske struck out, but reached on a wild pitch.
Alex Santos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs,
Calvin McCall lined a triple to the gap in right center to put Rhody in front, 9-7.
In the eighth inning, Ullinana's RBI single drove in Cavaliere with an insurance run.
In the top of the ninth, UMass got the tying run to the plate. Eddy Hart led off with a ground rule double and came in when Dylan Judd singled to right center. From there, Rhody's
Trystan Levesque settled down and got the next three batters on a fly out, pop out and strikeout to end the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Calvin McCall had a big day at the plate for Rhode Island, delivering two triples, one single, four runs batted in and scoring one run from the ninth spot in the order.
- Addison Kopack also had two of Rhode Island's five triples on the day. He had one in each game and finished the day with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
- Alex Ramirez tripled, doubled, drove in four runs and scored three times.
- Greg Cavaliere had four singles, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases, all in the second game.
- Sonny Ulliana had three hits on the day. He doubled in the opener, then singled twice, walked, drove in one and scored once in Game Two.
- Xavier Vargas was 3-or-5 with two RBI and a run in the second game.
- Mike Webb (4-0) remained unbeaten on the season while delivering his third complete game of the year. He has pitched at least 7.0 innings in each of his last four starts.
- Trystan Levesque improved to 3-1 by allowing just one earned run over 3.0 innings of relief in the second game.
