How It Happened
Rhode Island could not compete with the offensive firepower of Massachusetts, falling in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, 13-7 and 9-0.
Game 1 – Massachusetts 13, Rhode Island 7
Rhode Island pounded out 16 hits and had four walks, but it managed just seven runs in the opening game. The Rams could not slow down the UMass offense, as the Minutewomen scored five times in the third inning, three times in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth inning to pull away.
Rhody used a four-run top of the third to pull ahead 5-1. Back-to-back solo home runs from
Erica Robles and
Abby Fenbert highlighted the rally. Unfortunately, the momentum was short lived, as UMass responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. The first six UMass batters reached safely as Massachusetts was back in front, 6-5, when the dust settled. Seven runs over the next two innings put the game away for UMass.
Game 2 – Massachusetts 9, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
Pitcher Jessie DiPasquale dominated the second game, allowing just one single and facing three batters over the minimum as Massachusetts won with ease.
Rhode Island's lone hit of the game came in the fourth inning when
Ari Castillo lined a single to left field. DiPasquale did not allow any Rams to get beyond first base as she improved to 13-12 on the season.
UMass provided her with plenty of run support, scoring once in the first, six times in the second and two more times in the fourth.
