How it Happened
An early second-half goal by junior Brooke Cavino helped Rhode Island earn a 1-1 tie with in-state rival Providence in the season opener for both schools Thursday night.

Providence carried play for much of the first half. The visiting Friars struck first when Meg Hughes scored an unassisted tally in the 27th minute. Hughes carried the ball on a long run up the field and fired a shot from the corner of the box.

PC outshot the Rams 6-3 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.

Rhode Island came out firing after halftime and scored less than 90 seconds into the second period. Rebecca D'Anna's initial shot was stopped, but Cavino knocked the rebound home to knot the score.

A Rhody corner kick in the 52nd minute led to another Cavino shot on net, but PC keeper Emma Bodmer made the stop. That was Rhode Island's final shot on goal in regulation. Tess O'Connell fired a shot in the 86th minute, but it was high.

Providence came close in the 75th minute when Hannah McNulty hit the post with a shot. A couple minutes later, Alexis Rothmann managed a shot on goal, but URI keeper Faith Hutchins came up with the save.

Cavino had the best chance in the first overtime, but her shot in the 96th minute was saved by Bodmer. Both sides had multiple shots on goal in the second overtime, but neither could find the back of the net.
