How it Happened
Hofstra found the back of the net twice in the first half as it handed Rhode Island a 2-0 loss in the season opener for both sides Thursday night.
Matthew Vowinkel headed in a pass from Storm Strongin in the ninth minute to open the scoring. Jason Ramirez padded the lead for the Pride In the 32nd minute when he scored off an assist from Ryan Carmichael.
Rhode Island keeper
Stefan Schmidt kept the Rams close with a pair of stops. In the 25th minute Vowinkel fired a shot on net that Schmidt was able to punch over the crossbar. The redshirt senior came up big again in the 59th minute with a diving stop on a Carmichael shot from 25 yards out on a free kick.
The Rams managed three shots on goal in the second half, but Hofstra's Wessel Speel made the stop each time.
