Rams Pound Brown 45-24 for Third Straight Governor's Cup

How It Happened
The Governor's Cup is staying in Kingston for another year, thanks to a 45-24 win for Rhode Island over in-state rival Brown Saturday afternoon.

Matching the longest win streak in the series history for the Rams, Rhody (3-0) win its third straight cup, the first time URI has beaten Brown (0-1) three times in a row since 2006-08. The victory also gave Rhody the unofficial state title, as the Rams have beaten both Brown and Bryant this season.

Quarterback Kasim Hill accounted for four touchdowns and URI's defense produced three turnovers that turned in to 17 points for Rhode Island.

Brown (0-1) took its opening possession in for a touchdown for the first points of the day. EJ Perry hit Hayes Sutton for a 14-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 60-yard drive.

Rhode Island (3-0) responded immediately, needing just two minutes to drive 75 yards in six plays. A 41-yard pass from Kasim Hill to Ivory Frimpong gave URI a chunk play. Three plays later, Hill swung a pass to Justice Antrum, who took the pass 35 yards down the left sideline for a game-tying touchdown.

That was the start of 17 unanswered points for URI. The momentum stayed with the Rams, as linebacker Andre Blackett interception Perry for the first turnover of the game. Rhody picked up one first down before the drive stalled, but C.J. Carrick made a 33-yard field goal to make the score 10-7 Rhode Island. After the defense forced a punt. Hill plunged in from 1 yard out to cap a four-play, 70-yard drive that included a 56-yard pass from Hill to Caleb Warren.

Brown scored at the end of the second quarter to pull within 17-14 going into the break, but Rhody dominated the third quarter. The Rams outscored Brown 21-0 to essentially put the game away.

On the opening possession of the second half, Henry Yianakopolos had a strip sack and the fumble was recovered by Antionio Carter II. Given a short field, Hill drove the Rams 32 yads in six plays, hitting Warren for a 7-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone for a 24-14 lead.

After the teams traded possessions, Rhody forced a three-and-out, and a bad punt by Brown gave the Rams first-and-10 at the Bears 36. Hill hit Ivory Frimpong for 35 yards, then pushed the pile from 1 yard put to help make the score 31-14.

On the ensuing Brown drive, James Makszin forced and recovered a fumble in the red zone to give Rhode Island the ball at its own 17-yard line. After a 3-yard run by Antrum, Hill hit Matt Pires for 80 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown that put the Rams up, 38-14.

Brown managed a field goal and a three-and-out to make things a little interesting. However, cornerback Jordan Jones intercepted a pass in his own end zone and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown, icing the game for Rhode Island in emphatic fashion.
