How it Happened
The result was a bittersweet 1-1 draw between in-state rivals Rhode Island and Providence Monday night at the URI Soccer Complex. Both sides had victory in their grasp, only to feel fortunate to salvage the tie.
Gevork Diarbian put the visiting Friars on the board in the 28th minute when he scored off an assist from Christopher Roman. It was the lone tally of the half, as Rhode Island fired off plenty of shots, but could not crack the code against PC keeper Lukas Burns.
URI continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, peppering Burns with 13 shots in regulation. It seemed Rhody was destined for a night of frustration until
Patrick Agyemang snuck a shot by Burns in the 88th minute.
Kevin Castaneda played the ball into the box on the run, and Agyemang finished from 6 yards out to set up extra time.
Rhode Island dominated overtime, not allowing a shot. The Rams had a golden opportunity when Castaneda drew a penalty in the box in the 104th minute. Unfortunately, Agyemang's penalty kick sailed over the crossbar on the best chance for either side.
Inside the Box Score

- Vetle Nilsen, Isak Oystese, Cian Purcell, Zach Drayer and Agyemang played all 110 minutes for the Rams.
- Since a season-opening loss to a powerful Hofstra squad, Rhode Island is 2-0-1 in its last three matches.
- Rhode Island dominated ball possession, outshooting Providence 17-7.
- Providence keeper Lukas Burns made the tie possible for the Friars, as he came up with 12 saves.
- Rhody keeper Stefan Schmidt had five saves of his own, including four in the first half.
- Rhode Island's defense allowed just two shots total after halftime, and only one shot on goal.
- The game played as many URI-PC matches do, with chippy play. The teams combined for 10 yellow cards. PC's Davis Smith was booked twice in a span of 50 seconds early in the second half, leaving the Friars down a man from the 55th minute on.
