How it HappenedÂ
Rhode Island's season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night as the Rams – who had entered the day tied for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 – dropped out of the playoff picture with a 2-0 loss to Davidson. The win did nothing for the Wildcats' postseason hopes either as Rhody and Davidson finished in a three-way tie – with Saint Joseph's – for ninth in the conference standings.
Â
Rhode Island nearly struck in the 13th minute when a long free kick from
Edvin Akselsen went over Davidson goalkeeper Lou Liedtka and was headed for the back of the net before being cleared off the goal line by a Wildcat defender.
Rafa Villanueva had a great second-chance attempt, however Liedtka was able to hurry back into position and stop the shot, which would have gone into an otherwise empty net.
Â
The Wildcats eventually went up 1-0 in the 31st minute when Denis Krioutchenkov converted a penalty kick. Rhody's
Max Hinke guessed correctly on the attempt, but the shot scooted just past Hinke's fingertips to put Davidson on the board.
Â
The Wildcats added to the lead just 46 seconds into the second half, on an unassisted goal by Alonzo Clarke. Jack Brown got the play started with a long throw-in into the box, but an unfortunate deflection off a Rhody defender put the ball at Brown's feet and he was able to beat Hinke for the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Rhode Island peppered Davidson with 12 additional shots through the remainder of the game, but the Rams were unable to solve the Wildcats' defense. Five of those 12 attempts were blocked by Davidson players in addition to Liedtka stopping four.
