How it Happened
Rhode Island struggled defensively as it fell to in-state rival Providence 88-74 in front of a sellout crowd Saturday night.
Â
Though Rhode Island (2-6) took better care of the basketball in general, Providence (6-3) made the most of the turnovers it did create. The Friars outscored the Rams 17-2 in points off turnovers, despite URI committing a season-low 11 miscues. Much of that advantage came in the closing minutes of the first half, as PC turned a 23-22 Rhody advantage into a 43-27 edge in the final 6:19.
Both teams came out clicking to begin the second half, though the first four baskets by the Friars came on layups. Providence had significant success in the paint, scoring 52 points close to the basket. Much of that came on second-chance scoring, where PC turned 12 offensive boards into a 22-6 edge in the paint.
Rhode Island was more efficient offensively, but it was never able to get the score back to single digits, as the Friars won at the Ryan Center for the first time since 2015.
