URI Edged In Extra Innings at Gardner-Webb, 6-5

How It Happened
Rhode Island (1-1) rallied from a two-run deficit to force extra innings, but the Rams eventually fell to host Gardner-Webb 6-5 in eight innings Friday night at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Gardner-Webb (2-0) scored single runs in each of the first four innings to build a 4-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Leilyn Alvarez was hit by a pitch and stole second base. She advanced to third on a groundout before coming in on a two-out double from Ainsley Yoshizumi.

An inning later, Rhody manufactured another run to tie the score. Skyler Rapuano drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Cassie Swenson drove her in with a groundout, making the score 4-4.

In the top of the eighth, Yoshizumi was placed on second the open the frame. Rapuano singled to center, and an error in the outfield allowed Yoshizumi to come around to score, giving URI its first lead, 5-4.

The Bulldogs began the bottom of the inning with Andrea Lyon on second base. An infield popup and a groundout left Rhode Island one out from the victory with Lyon still on second. Kayleigh Nicholson singled to put runners on the corners. Riley McMurry followed with a single of her own, driving in Lyon to tie the game.
