Lynchard, Rams Knock Off Gardner-Webb, 2-1

How It Happened
For the second time in as many days, Liz Lynchard pitched a complete game to lead Rhode Island to a 2-1 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Lynchard (2-0) retired the final nine batters she faced, delivering a strong performance throughout.

Rhode Island (2-1) provided all the runs she would need in the top of the second inning. Cassie Swenson started the frame with a double, and the Rams put runners on the corners when Susan Harrison reached on an error. After Harrison stole second, Emily Power was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Rachel Zingerman drew a walk to bring Swenson in with the first run of the day. Sami Villarreal followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Harrison to score and put URI up, 2-0.

Gardner-Webb (2-2) got its run in the fifth inning. Riley McCurry singled to lead off and moved to second when Ayana Bezares was hit by a pitch. A Baylee Short single loaded the bases with no outs. A Goodrum drove in McCurry with a sacrifice fly and get the Bulldogs within a run. However, Lynchard got a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat and preserve the Rhode Island lead.
