How it Happened
William and Mary (3-0) jumped all over Rhode Island starter
Trystan Levesque, scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. The Tribe also benefited from three URI errors in the extended inning.
Rhody (0-3) put a five spot on the board in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game at 6-5.
Jordan Laske,
Anthony DePino,
Tommy Cartnick and
Alex Ramirez led off the inning with four consecutive walks, forcing the Tribe to make a pitching change. The next batter,
Calvin McCall, was the hit by a pitch to push across DePino.
Joe Fortin then drew the Rams' fifth walk of the frame to send home Cartnick and cut the Tribes lead in half at 6-3.
With the bases still loaded,
Eric Genther reached on a 5-4 fielder's choice play which allowed Ramirez to cross the plate. McCall then scored on an RBI single by
Xavier Vargas – URI's only hit of the inning.
Rhode Island managed just one hit the rest of the way – a sixth-inning single by Genther.
William & Mary took advantage of URI's fifth error of the game in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four unearned runs for the eventual 10-5 victory.
