Rams Edged by Providence in 8 Innings

How It Happened
Providence (17-7) pushed across a run in the top of the eighth to edge Rhode Island (5-16) in eight innings Tuesday.

Pinch runner Elysia Cunnigan scored when Micaela Abbatine chipped a two-out single into shallow right field. The hit provided the winning margin.

The Friars got single runs in the first and third innings to build the early 2-0 lead. Ari Castillo tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run, two-out double off the fence in left center that drove in Rachel Zingerman and Sami Villarreal.

Unfortunately Rhode Island could not get another run across. It was the fourth extra-inning game for Rhody this season, each of which has ended in a one-run loss for the Rams.

Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman Scarlett Anderson provided a strong start in the circle. She allowed just one earned run on three hits over 5.0 innings of work, despite not factoring in the decisions.
  • Rhode Island has played nine one-run games in 21 contests this season, going 2-7. The Rams played nine one-run games in 47 contests in 2020-21, going 4-5.
  • First baseman Rachel Zingerman recorded 14 putouts in the game, a single-game record for non-catchers for URI. The previous high was 13 by outfielder Jhokania DeLos Santos in an 11-inning game against Charlotte on April 28, 2012.
  • Zingerman was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one sacrifice bunt in the leadoff spot. She is batting .429 as the leadoff hitter this season.
  • The Rams had three sacrifice hits in the game, the team's most since having four against Abilene Christian on March 1, 2014.
  • Senior Ari Castillo had a double with two runs batted in.
  • She now has a team-high 15 RBI on the year and 63 in her career, moving up to 16th in program history.
  • Junior Cassie Swenson singled, walked and had a sacrifice bunt.
  • Senior Sami Villarreal doubled and scored one run.
