How It Happened
Providence (17-7) pushed across a run in the top of the eighth to edge Rhode Island (5-16) in eight innings Tuesday.
Pinch runner Elysia Cunnigan scored when Micaela Abbatine chipped a two-out single into shallow right field. The hit provided the winning margin.
The Friars got single runs in the first and third innings to build the early 2-0 lead.
Ari Castillo tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run, two-out double off the fence in left center that drove in
Rachel Zingerman and
Sami Villarreal.
Unfortunately Rhode Island could not get another run across. It was the fourth extra-inning game for Rhody this season, each of which has ended in a one-run loss for the Rams.
