How It Happened
Rhode Island suffered a pair of losses at Fordham Saturday, falling 9-0 in the opener and then dropping a heartbreaker in the second game, 3-2, when Bailey Enoch delivered a walk-off solo home run.
Rhode Island fell to 5-18 overall and 1-6 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham improved to 11-13 and 3-4 in conference play.
Game 1 – Fordham 9, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
Rhode Island suffered its first eight-run rule loss of the season as Fordham scored in each of the first four innings and coasted to the victory.
Fordham struck for a run in the first inning when Allie Clark drew a one-out walk and advanced on a single by Rachel Hubertus. Julia Martine followed with a single up the middle that brought Clark in. The hosts added two more in the second inning when Hubertus lined a two-out double down the left field line that drove in Brianna Pinto and Sarah Taffet.
Fordham continued to add to the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Taffet drove in Amanda Carey with a two-out single, and then eventually scored herself when Clark singled through the left side to make the scored 5-0. Fordham got four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to nine runs and set up the mercy rule victory.
Game 2 – Fordham 3, Rhode Island 2
Rhode Island rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final two innings, only to see Fordham win on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Rhody trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning.
Ari Castillo drew a leadoff walk and
Ainsley Yoshizumi came on as a pinch runner. Yoshizumi moved up on
Cassie Swenson's single to left, and
Susan Harrison put both in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A
Maddie Melice single through the right side drove in Yoshizumi, but a pair of fly outs ended the threat.
In the top of the seventh,
Leilyn Alvarez walked and stole second. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Sami Villarreal before
Rachel Zingerman singled to right to bring Alvarez home with the tying run.
Bailey Enoch ended the game in the bottom of the seventh when she drilled a solo home run on a 3-0 pitch.

- Sophomore Maddie Melice provided a three-hit game in the second contest, all singles. She raised her season batting average to .304
- Senior Sami Villarreal walked twice in the first game and once in the second game. She also had a single and a sacrifice bunt.
- With three walks on the day, Villarreal moved into
- Junior Cassie Swenson had three hits on the day, singling once in the opener and twice in the second game. She extended her hitting streak to seven games, matching the team's long for the season so far.
- Junior Liz Lynchard pitched her fifth complete game of the season in the second contest.
- Freshman Leiyln Alvarez stole her eight base of the season in the second game. She needs just two more to be the first URI player with at least 10 in a season since Kelly Coker had 15 in 2003.
