How it Happened
Offense was hard to come by as Rhode Island was edged 4-3 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Rhode Island (3-20) had a golden chance to snap a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases without the benefit of a hit. With one out,
Joe Fortin and
Alex Ramirez were both hit by a pitch.
Justin Cherry followed by reaching on an error by pitcher Michael Gemma to load the bases. However, Owen Langan came on in relief and struck out two straight batters to end the threat.
Feeding off the momentum of Langan's work, Luke Beckstein led off the sixth with a double down the right field line. Danny Crossen then reached on an error that enabled Beckstein to come in with the first run of the game. After a strikeout, Crossen was picked off for the second out of the inning.
Before the inning ended, Northeastern (13-11-1) pieced together a two-out rally. Justin Bosland tripled and scored on a single by JP Olson. Olson stolen second and eventually scored on a Buddy Mwowka single to make the score 3-0. The Huskies padded the lead with a run in the seventh.
The Rams finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. URI again loaded the bases without any hits, as Ramirez led off with a walk,
Tino Salgado reached on a two-out walk and
Jack Cucinotta was hit by a pitch.
Eric Genther was hit by a pitch to force Ramirez in before
Addison Kopack singled through the left side to plate Salgado and Cucinotta and make it a 4-3 game.
URI got the potential tying run on in the bottom of the ninth when Salgado drew a one-out walk. He stole second to get into scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.
