How It Happened
A frustrating day at the plate resulted in Rhode Island dropping its first two contests at the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. on Friday. The Rams (3-12) were blanked two times, falling 2-0 to LIU before losing 1-0 to Radford in the second game of the day.
Game 1 – LIU 2, Rhode Island 0
After getting just two base runners on through the first six innings, Rhode Island managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but it could not score.
Sami Villarreal led off with a walk. With two outs,
Skyler Rapuano and
Rachel Zingerman had back-to-back singles to fill the bases, but relief pitcher Elena Valenzuela came on to retire the only batter she faced to save the win for Alyssa O'Donnell.
LIU (3-11) got single runs in the third and fifth innings. In the third, Kiana Cisneros led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ciara Granado. Granado provided insurance with an RBI single that drove in Camryn Lyman in the fifth.
O'Donnell (3-3) allowed just three singles and two walks. Her defense turned a pair of double plays, as she faced just three batters over the minimum for the game.
Game 2 – Radford 1, Rhode Island 0
Rhode Island got multiple runners on base in the first, third and fourth innings, but it was unable to break through against Radford's Skyler DeHart. DeHart (1-2) allowed just four singles and retired the final 12 batters she faced.
Radford (6-5) got the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. Cassi Barbato led off with a walk and moved to second when Lindsay Hunter drew a two-out walk. Cori McMillan delivered a single that brought Barbato home and proved to be the difference in the game.
