Rams, Dukes Set for First-Round Battle on ESPN+

RHODE ISLAND VS. DUQUESNE - SERIES NOTES

  • Wednesday's game will be the 64th meeting between Rhode Island and Duquesne.
  • It is the second meeting in 11 days between the schools, as Rhode Island knocked off the Dukes 70-54 at the Ryan Center on Feb. 26.
  • When the teams met during the regular season, Rhode Island's backcourt trio of Ishmael El-Amin (season-high 21 points, seven rebounds), Ishmael Leggett (13 points) and Jeremy Sheppard (11 points) combined for 45 points.
  • URI leads the all-time series, 35-28.
  • Rhode Island and Duquesne have met three times in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Dukes upset URI 78-74 in the quarterfinals in 2009 when Rhody was the No. 2 seed.
  • In 2003, URI beat Duquesne 75-73 in the first round, and in 1995 Duquense scored an 82-69 win in the first round.
  • Last season, the teams met twice. Duquesne won 86-75 on Feb. 27, 2021 and 71-69 on Jan. 20, 2021. In a rare situation created by COVID, both of the games were play in Pittsburgh.
  • The game features two of the lowest scoring teams in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island is 11th in the conference at 67.0 points per game, while Duquesne is last in the A-10, scoring 64.8 per contest.
  • On the other end of the floor, Rhody is third in the league, allowing just 64.6 points per game. Duquesne is 13th in scoring defense, giving up 73.2 points per game.
  • Rhode Island enters the tournament win two straight losses and five of its last six games overall.
  • Duquesne has dropped its last 16 contests.

RHODE ISLAND AT THE ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP

  • Rhode Island is the No. 11 seed at this year's Atlantic 10 Championship.
  • It is the third time the Rams have been the 11th seed, which is the lowest URI has been seeded in the championship.
  • The previous times Rhody was the 11th seed were in 2014 (65-61 loss to Massachusetts); 2008 (75-73 loss to Charlotte) and 2001 (85-59 loss to Dayton).
  • Rhode Island is 29-36 all time in the Atlantic 10 Championship, winning the tournament twice (1999 and 2017).
  • Over its last three appearances at the championship, URI has a 7-3 record.
  • The team went 3-0 in 2017, 2-1 in 2018, 2-1 in 2019 and 0-1 in 2021.
  • Head coach David Cox is 2-2 at the A-10 tournament. In 2019, the Rams were seeded eighth and advanced to the semifinals by defeating  No. 9 La Salle and top-seeded VCU.
  • The tournament was called off in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a year the Rams were the No. 3 seed.
  • Last year, Rhode Island was the 10th seed and feel to seventh-seeded Dayton 84-72.
  • The Rams have played in the A-10 finals five times and the semifinals 15 times overall.
  • Since the tournament began in 1981, URI has dropped its first game 20 times, and it did not qualify twice (2012, 2013).
