How it Happened
Defensive woes and struggles with command doomed the Rams early on as URI found itself trailing Brown 11-1 after just three innings of play. Through those first three innings, the Bears combined for eight hits, but also benefitted from eight walks, one hit batter and four Rhode Island errors.
Â
Rhody's John Jones managed to keep the Bears off the board in the fourth inning, but gave up five runs in the fifth to make it a 16-1 game.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, a bases-loaded walk to
Eric Genther pushed across
Tino Salgado and
Joe Fortin was hit by a pitch to send home
Jack Cucinotta, making the score 16-3. The Rams added two more in the sixth as
Tommy Cartnick scored on an
Alex Ramirez double before Cucinotta made it 16-5 on a sacrifice fly by
Addison Kopack.
Â
Brown rallied for six more runs in the top of the eighth, and tacked on one more in the ninth for the eventual 23-5 victory.
