How It Happened
Rhode Island (10-28, 4-13 Atlantic 10) dropped two games to first-place George Washington Saturday afternoon. Both games were competitive, but in vastly different ways.
Game 1 – George Washington 8, Rhode Island 2
With single runs in each of the first two innings, Rhode Island had a 2-1 lead heading into the third. The visiting Colonials scored a run in the top of the third and then took their first lead with another run in the fifth.
A five-run sixth inning changed the complexion of the game. Alexa Williams delivered the big blow, drilling a grand slam with two outs to turn a two-run game into a six-run lead for George Washington. Rhode Island was unable to threaten the lead late.

Game 2 – George Washington 15, Rhode Island 10
Rhode Island made a furious comeback to rally from a nine-run deficit and tie the score, but George Washington (25-12, 15-2 A-10) responded with a six-run sixth inning to win it late.
Rhody trailed 9-1 after the Colonials scored seven times in the top of the second. With four-run rallied in the second and fifth innings, URI was able to knot the score.
Emily Power delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in
Margaux Lesser to start the scoring in the fifth.
Rachel Zingerman added a two-run single, and a double steal by Zingerman and
Ainsley Yoshizumi resulted in a tie game.
The Colonials came right back with a six-run rally of their own. Mia Parker's two-run home run and Maggie Greco's two-run single enabled George Washington to take command and secure the victory.
Inside the Box Scores
- Rhode Island had four stolen bases on the day and is up to 40 for the season. It is the first time since 2013 (48) the Rams have had 40 in a season.
- Senior Ari Castillo had five hits on the day, raising her batting average to a season-high .287. Over her last nine games, she has 16 hits.
- Castillo had one run batted in, moving into sole possession of 10th place in program history.
- Junior Rachel Zingerman had a career-high four hits in the second game. She leads the team with 36 on the year.
- Junior Cassie Swenson and freshman Leilyn Alvarez each had three hits on the day. Alvarez also stole her team-leading 12th base.
- Senior Sami Villarreal singled, drew three walks and scored a pair of runs.
- Junior Skyler Rapuano doubled, singled and scored twice.
