GW Pulls Away From Rams Late

How It Happened
A five-run seventh inning broke a tie game and led to a three-game sweep for George Washington over Rhode Island Sunday afternoon. The Colonials won the series finale 9-4.

Rhode Island (10-29, 4-14 Atlantic 10) held a two-run lead through the first four innings. The Rams struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Skyler Rapuano and a two-run single off the bat of Ainsley Yoshizumi.

GW (25-12, 15-2 A-10) got one run back in the top of the fourth, then took its first lead with three more in the fifth inning. A leadoff homer from Sierra Lange trimmed the Rhody lead to 4-3. Alexa Williams and Alessandra Ponce hit back-to-back singles and a walk to Mia Parker loaded the bases. A double by Hannah Eslick drove in a pair to put the Colonials up 4-3. Rhody pitcher Piper Maguire got out of the inning without any further damage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ari Castillo drilled a solo home run with two outs to tie scored at 4-4. Neither team scored in the sixth, but George Washington pushed five across in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

  • Sophomore Vicki Viaclovsky extended her hitting streak to seven games with a pair of singles and one run scored. She has raised her batting average 94 points to .294 over the last 11 games.
  • With her sixth home run of the season, senior Ari Castillo moved into a tie for fourth place in Rhode Island history with Alyssa Martino, who had 17 from 2004-07.
  • In 128 career games, Castillo now has 137 career hits. She needs 13 more hits to become just the ninth URI player to reach 150 for her career.
  • Freshman Ainsley Yoshizumi had a double, one single and two RBI. It was her first career multi-hit game.
  • Junior Skyler Rapuano tripled, singled, scored once and drove in one run. .
  • Junior Rachel Zingerman had one single.
