Rhody Falls Twice at George Mason

How It Happened
Rhode Island (11-32, 4-16, Atlantic 10) was limited to just one run in each game as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader at George Mason Saturday. The Patriots took the opener 9-1 in six innings and then the second game by a 5-1 score.

Game 1 – George Mason 9, Rhode Island 1 (6 inn.)
George Mason struck early with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Patriots needed just three batters to set up the early lead. Marlaina Bozek led off with a walk and Taylor Dadig followed with an infield single. EJ Bankson brought both in with a double down the left field line.

Rhody got one back in the top of the third. Leilyn Alvarez drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second base. She came in when Rachel Zingerman singled up the middle.

In the bottom of the fourth, George Mason broke the contest open with a five-run rally. After the first batter was retired, the Patriots got seven singles and a walk as they kept the line moving and pushed five runs across. Two innings later, a two-run double by Haley Taormina served as the walk-off hit as the eight-run rule was enforced.

Game 2 – George Mason 5, Rhode Island 1
After George Mason scored in the bottom of the first, Sami Villarreal hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning for Rhody to tie the game, 1-1. That was all the scoring the Rams managed, as Carly Cooper limited URI to five hits. The Patriots (20-26, 8-12 A-10) got a pair of runs in both the third and sixth innings to cruise to the sweep.
