Rhode Island Comes Up Short at George Mason, 3-2

Box Score How It Happened
Rhode Island (11-33, 4-17, Atlantic 10) could not complete the comeback as it dropped the series finale at George Mason, losing to the Patriots 3-2 Sunday morning.

The Patriots (21-26, 9-12 A-10) took the first lead of the game when EJ Bankston delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning. Marlaina Bozek was hit by a pitch with one out and Taylor Dadig followed with a double down the rightfield line, putting two in scoring position for Bankston.

Dadig added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth. She delivered an RBI single up the middle to drive in Amber Verstynen, who had singled and moved up on a sacrifice.

Rhode Island trimmed the deficit in the top of the sixth. Rachel Zingerman reached on an error, and Leilyn Alvarez followed with an infield single. Ari Castillo fouled out to the first baseman, but Zingerman was able to tag and advance, putting runners on the corners. This allowed Alvarez to steal second. Vicki Viaclovsky followed with a single to right center, bringing in Zingerman and Alvarez to make the score 3-2.

Unfortunately the Rams went in order in the top of the seventh and were unable to tie the score.

Inside the Box Scores
  • Sophomore Vicki Viaclovsky singled, walked and drove in two runs.
  • Junior Rachel Zingerman walked, stole her 10th base of the season a base and scored a run.
  • Freshman Leilyn Alvarez singled, stole her 14th base of the year and scored a run.
  • Zingerman and Alvarez are the first pair of URI players with 10 or more swipes in the same season since Gabby Zagami (17) and Kristen Havdoglous (11) did so in 2002.
  • Senior Ari Castillo singled.
  • Junior Skyler Rapuano made a key defensive play in the fifth inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Haley Taormina hit a hard, sinking line drive to left. Rapuano made the catch and doubled the runner off second to end the inning.
  • Junior Liz Lynchard pitched her second complete game of the weekend for the Rams. She has 11 complete games in 25 starts.
