How It Happened
Rhode Island struggled to make contact against Bryant pitcher Jocelyn Bodington as it fell 4-2 to its in-state rival Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams (5-23) got on the board in its first at bat.
Skyler Rapuano worked a walk and stole second to get into scoring position. Eventually
Susan Harrison drove her in with a two-out single to right.
However, Bryant (6-18) came right back with two in the top of the second. Carly Hernandez led off with a single and moved to third on a double to right by Aleix Hudson. A walk to Hailey Aspinwall loaded the bases with one out. Abby Trimble was hit by a pitch to force Hernandez in, and a two-out walk to Jenna Gardner forced Hudson to make the score 2-1.
The Bulldogs padded the lead in the third when Alexis Clancy drilled a home run to center to lead off the inning.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth.
Sami Villarreal singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a passed ball. She advanced on a flyout by
Ari Castillo, then scored when Harrison lofted a sacrifice fly to right, cutting the deficit to one run.
Bryant added an insurance run in the sixth when Gardner delivered Aspinwall from third with a sacrifice fly. It was more than enough run support for Bodington (2-3). She pitched a complete game while striking out 12 batters. Rhode Island managed six hits, but only one went for extra bases. Â
