How it Happened
A frustrating offensive day for Rhode Island resulted in a 6-4 extra-inning loss to St. Bonaventure in the opener of a three-game A-10 series Friday afternoon.
After being held scoreless by URI relief pitcher
Sean Sposato for six innings, St. Bonaventure (2-18, 1-3 Atlantic 10) broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the 11th. Matthew Williams led the inning off with a single and moved to third on a double by Garrett Boldt. Both came in when Jackson DeJohn got a single up the middle past a drawn in Rhode Island infield.
In the bottom of the 11th, Rhode Island (5-22, 2-1 A-10) got its first three batters on base, but a pair of base running mistakes killed the inning.
Alex Ramirez led off with a double, but was thrown out trying to steal third on an
Addison Kopack walk. That play was exacerbated when
Eric Genther followed with a single up the middle that would have made it a one-run game.
The base running woes continued as Kopack was picked off second base by DeJohn, the St. Bonaventure catcher, following a pitch to
Anthony DePino. DePino then popped up to second to end the game.
