SARASOTA, Fla. – Each of Rhode Island's three boats finished according to seed in their respective flights during the opening heats of the 2022 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship Friday morning.
In the morning heats, the top two boats in each heat advanced to Saturday's semifinals. The remaining boats will back on the water Friday afternoon for the repechage round.
Competing on flat water for ideal conditions at Nathan Benderson Park, Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ crew was URI's first boat on the water Friday morning. No. 4 Brown pushed the pace off the dock, taking an early lead over No. 5 Yale and No. 12 SMU. In the third 500, Brown strengthened its lead to secure its spot in the semifinals, followed by Yale, which withstood a late charge from SMU to claim the second spot in Saturday's semifinals.

Josephine Grady went up against No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Brown, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 13 Princeton and No. 21 Jacksonville in the morning heat.
Competing in Lane 1, the Rams stayed in contact with the top four boats through the first 500 meters before Stanford, Princeton, Brown and Syracuse created separation. Stanford and Princeton secured the spots in the semifinals, while Brown, Syracuse, URI and Jacksonville landed in the reps. The Rams finished the heat in a time of 7:01.394, holding off Jacksonville (7:02.414) at the finish to place fifth in the heat.
 In the Varsity 4+ flight, No. 5 Washington dominated Heat 4, creating open water from the rest of the field well before the midpoint of the 2000-meter mark. No. 4 Ohio State grabbed the second spot, as the field was very spaced out. No. 21 URI's contingent of coxswainÂ
