Rams Secure Spots in D Finals of Each Flight

Complete Results

SARASOTA, Fla.
 – After three rounds of competition, Rhode Island's three boats have each qualified for the D Finals of their respective flights at the 2022 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship.

Racing at Nathan Benderson Park was slightly delayed due to weather conditions. However, Saturday's semifinal heats were able to be completed despite a one-hour delay to begin the morning.

Saturday's semifinals were used to determine spots in the finals on the final day of competition Sunday. In each of the Semifinal 3 and Semifinal 4 races, the top three finishers advanced to Sunday's C Finals, while the two remaining boats in each heat landed in the D Finals.

The Varsity 8+ semis were the first on the water, and Rhode Island's (6:42.402) team of coxswain Ellie McGee, stroke Anna Sampson, Julia Fortin, Hailey Pardi, Emily Drappeau, Nicole Jones, Kathy Zeglen, Jennae Alexander and Catie Castle competed in Semifinal 4 against No. 15 Duke, No. 16 Rutgers, No. 17 USC and No. 22 Jacksonville. After the first two rounds, the Rams had earned an interior lane for the semifinals, but Rhody could not maintain pace with USC, Duke and Rutgers, as the top three boats pulled away by midway through the race. It was Rutgers winning in a time of 6:23.961, followed across by Duke (6:25.839), USC (6:26.283), Jacksonville (6:44.423) and Rhode Island (6:49.003).

In the Second Varsity 8+ flight, Rhode Island was in Semifinal 3 against No. 15 Rutgers, No. 16 Oregon State, No. 17 USC and No. 18 Gonzaga. The team of coxswain Danielle Swan, stroke Emily Olin, Sam Gumprecht, Emory Caswell, Kat Gillies, Elizabeth Greason, Morgan Cody, Tinsley Copeland and Josephine Grady (7:08.164) maintained contact with the field through the 1000-meter mark, but eventually Rutgers, Oregon State and USC created space away from Gonzaga and the Rams. Rutgers won in a time of 6:44.097, followed by Oregon State (6:48.047), USC (6:53.501), Gonzaga (7:02.925) and URI (7:08.551).

The final flight of the day was the Varsity 4+ where URI was in Semifinal 3 along with No. 14 Oregon State, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 19 Boston University and No. 20 Gonzaga. Rhody's crew of coxswain Caitlyn Muteru, stroke Sammie Gorecki, Alexis Moore, Sarah Pecoraro and Olivia Kowalski just missed a spot in Sunday's C Final, finishing fourth in the race. Syracuse won the race handily in a time of 7:27.609, followed by Oregon State (7:33.147). The Rams stayed in contact with Gonzaga throughout, but the Bulldogs managed to hold off Rhody to secure the third spot in the C Final. URI and Boston University moved on to tomorrow's D Final.

Sunday will be the final day of competition at the championship. Each of Rhode Island's boats will place somewhere in the range of 19-22 in their respective flight. The Varsity 4+ will be the first URI boat on the water, competing at 8:10 a.m. The Second Varsity 8+ D Final is scheduled for 8:58 a.m. and the Varsity 8+ is slated to go off at 8:58 a.m.
