How it Happened
A late second half rally by sophomore Tierra Garniss wasn't enough for the Rams in a 3-2 battle at Duquesne Thursday night.Â
The Dukes struck first in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. A straight shot by Brianna Moore hit the cross bar and bounced into the back of the net past keeper Faith Hutchins. Duquesne went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Dukes doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half. Duquesne drew a foul to connect on a free kick just outside the box by Jaimi Araujo. Araujo scored her second goal of the game 10 minutes later. A long ball from Emma Bundy found Araujo who beat the Rhody defender and had a blast just out of Hutchins' reach.Â
Rhode Island's offense came alive in the 65th minute, after Duquesne keeper Maddy Nuendorfer was tripped up by Garniss. Garniss was able to get a shot off and score to get the Rams on the board, 3-1.Â
Rhody cut the deficit to one after Garniss scored her second goal of the match less than three minutes later. Tali O'Leary set her up with a dish just outside the box to make the score 3-2 with just over 20 minutes remaining (67:39).Â
With three minutes left of play, Garniss almost struck again with a shot that hit the cross bar but bounced just out of the box. The Rams had a few more shot opportunities, but a strong Duquesne backline blocked them from scoring.
Rhody had one last chance after drawing a corner kick with 35 seconds remaining, but the Rams couldn't get a touch and the ball went out of bounds as the clock ran to 0.
