How it HappenedÂ
A stunning finish led to a draw for Rhode Island and UMass Lowell Friday night, as the visiting River Hawks scored in the 89th minute to salvage a 2-2 tie at the URI Soccer Complex.
With Rhode Island holding a 2-1 lead, the Rams earned a corner kick with two minutes remaining. Looking to milk the clock, URI kept the ball pinned in the corner, but it eventually went over the end line for a goal kick. Jacob Heisel sent the ball to midfield, helping draw a foul on Rhody's
Isak Oystese and giving UMass Lowell a free kick.
Off the set piece, the River Hawks lofted a pass into the box, which Borna Miklic played off his heel to set up Daragh Reilly for the goal.
UMass Lowell had struck first, when Miklic found the back of the net. Viljar Byrkjeland lofted a pass to the middle of the field just outside the box, setting up Miklic for a point-blank chance. He had a clean look and sent a shot to the lower left corner past Rhody keeper
Max Hinke.
Rhody nearly got an equalizer on a corner kick in the 22nd minute.
Patrick Gryczewski lofted a ball into the box and
Isak Oystese got his head on it, but UMass Lowell keeper Jacob Heihsel came up with the most impressive of his three saves in the half to prevent the goal.
The Rams knotted the score early in the second half. A throw in by
Kevin Castaneda sent
Rafa Villanueva down the right side of the box. Villanueva was able to get a right-footed shot into the upper left corner at a tough angle, sneaking the ball between two defenders and Heihsel in the 51st minute.
Castaneda then gave URI a 2-1Â advantage in the 62nd minute.
Ivan Montoro took a cross and fired on net, but Heihsel made the initial stop. Castaneda drilled the rebound to the back of the net.
Unfortunately the lead didn't hold and the Rams settled for their second draw of the season.
