How it Happened
Rhode Island came out hot and scored an early goal off of a set piece from just outside the 18-yard box. It was
Patrick Gryczewski who gave the Rams the advantage in the 12th minute, firing a free kick that Lukas Burns was unable to hold on to. Burns made the initial stop, pulling the shot down from over his head, but was unable to fully possess the ball, which slid down his chest and bounced over the goal line to put Rhody up 1-0.
Providence responded in the 28th minute, when Gevork Diarbian evaded four Rhode Island defenders and lined a shot inside the right post, past a diving
Max Hinke.
The Friars continued to apply the pressure in the second half, but Hinke stopped each of the four shots he faced. Burns finished the game strong as well, saving late attempts from
Kevin Castaneda and
Zach Drayer – both of which came within the final five minutes.
