How it Happened
Brandon Bermingham scored in his fourth-straight game to try and salvage a tie in the Rhode Island men's soccer match against VCU on Saturday night, but a pair of late goals by the visitors let them get away with a 3-1 win.
The majority of the action came in the second half, as the teams were scoreless in the opening 45 minutes. Rhode Island had a narrow, 8-7 advantage in shots heading into the break and both sides recorded four shots on goal, respectively, in the opening period.
VCU was first to strike, countering off of a Rhode Island set piece with a two-on-one opportunity that resulted in a goal by Damian Gallegos in the 64th minute.
Though it took a while for URI to respond, the team eventually did so 20 minutes later when Bermingham got his head on a cross by
Nikos Clarke-Tosczak and put a ball in the upper right corner of the net.
While it seemed like the home team was going to be able to hold on for the tie, VCU netted the go-ahead goal in the final three minutes and added another with less than a minute to go to claim its victory.
