How it Happened
A run of three unanswered goals in the second half lifted George Mason over Rhode Island, 4-2, Wednesday night.
The teams each converted a penalty kick in the opening half, with Souley Diouf netting one for George Mason in the 11th minute, and
Brandon Bermingham converted one for the Rams in the 30th minute.
Rhode Island had several strong chances throughout the half, outshooting George Mason 5-2. URI put three of its shots on net and had a goal waved off by an offsides call. Despite controlling play in the first 45, the Rams were unable to find the back of the net.
The second half belonged to the Patriots. Asparuh Slavov scored off an assist from Brent Fields in the 51st minute. He added a goal on a penalty kick – the third of the match – six minutes later to extend the lead to 3-1. An unassisted goal by Luis Maestre made it 4-1 in the 74th minute.
Mathias Taylor got one back for the Rams in the 84th minute off an assist from
Íñigo Etxegarai in the 84th minute to cap the scoring.
