How it Happened
A slow start on the offensive end and a rough night at the free throw line cost Rhode Island as Brown took a 67-64 win over the Rams Wednesday.
Despite trailing by 11 points with six minutes to go, the Rams (5-4) managed to get within striking distance. Brown (3-8) held an eight-point lead with 2:30 to go when
Jaden House hit a layup. After an empty possession for Brown
Luis Kortright drew a shooting foul and made both free throws to get URI with six at 62-56. Â
Brown got one point back on a free throw by Kino Lilly, Jr. (22 points) with 1:13 left, but
Zek Montgomery hit a 3-point jumper off of a fast break to close the gap to four points. Again Brown made 1-of-2 at the line, and House converted a hoop-and-harm three-point play to make it a one-score game at 64-62. Lilly, Jr. made two free throws to make it a two-possession game before House hit another layup with eight seconds to go.
Rhody quickly fouled Lilly, Jr. again, and he converted 1-of-2 to keep the game a one-possession content. The Bears fouled
Luis Kortright before he could get a 3-point attempt off, forcing URI to intentionally miss at the free throw line. A loose-ball scramble gave Rhody possession under the basket with one second to go, but the Rams were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer as they dropped their third straight game in the in-state series.
