How it Happened
Rhode Island gave up a five-run lead and eventually fell 8-6 at Bucknell in the opener of a three-game series Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (3-7) took advantage of sloppy Bucknell defense in the top of the first inning.
Mark Coley reached on an error by the third baseman, and
Addison Kopack reached on an error by the shortstop.
Michael Anderson made it three in a row, when he reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Anderson made it all the way to third on the play, while Coley and Kopack both scored. Anderson eventually scored on an RBI groundout by
Eric Genther, putting Rhody up 3-0.
It was more of the same in the top of the second.
Connor Grotyohann reached on the fourth Bison error of the game, and
Rob Butler followed with a single. A groundout moved both into scoring position, and Kopack drove in Grotyohann with a fielder's choice grounder.
Billy Butler later brought Kopack in with a two-out single, putting URI up 5-0.
Rhhody starter
Sean Sposato cruised through the first four innings, allowing just a pair of singles. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Bucknell (3-9) got five consecutive singles before Sean Keys tied the game with a two-out, two run double to cap a five-run rally.
The Bison took their first lead in the home half of the sixth on a two-run double from Anthony Sherwin. Bucknell added an insurance run in the next inning to build the lead to 8-5.
Rhody manufactured a run in the eighth. Grotyohann walked to lead off, and pinch runner
David Marchetti advanced on a balk. A groundout moved him to third, and after two outs were recorded, Marchetti scored on a wild pitch to get the Rams within two runs. That was as close as URI got.
