How it Happened
A dismal offensive effort put a damper on the regular-season finale, as Rhode Island fell to Davidson 68-54 Saturday night.
Neither team had much flow in the opening half, combining to go 14-for-54 from the field. By the end of the half, the visiting Wildcats (15-15, 8-10 Atlantic 10) held a slight 20-18 edge. It was both the lowest point total for Rhody (9-21, 5-13 A-10) in a first half this season, and a lowest point total for any URI opponent in the opening half this year.
Davidson guard Foster Loyer - who had 12 points before halftime - really took over in the second half. He scored 21 of his 33 points after the break, shooting 8-for-8 at the free throw line and 3-for-6 from long range.
Ishmael Leggett score the first basket of the second half, tying the game 17 seconds into the period. That was the last tie in the game, as Davidson steadily pulled away from the Rams. Despite shooting 54.2 percent from the floor in the second half, the Rams also turned the ball over 11 times and could not keep up with the Wildcats.
