Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops One, Ties One at Holy Cross

How It Happened
Holy Cross held off a late Rhode Island rally in the opener, and then the Crusaders (14-28-1) scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to salvage a tie in the second game. The results for Rhode Island (16-24-1) extended the team's winless streak to six games.

Game 1 - Holy Cross 4, Rhode Island 3
Holy Cross struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Olivia Eckelman drew a one-out walk, and Morgan Jensen followed with a double to left that put two in scoring position. A Bailey Bates groundout brought Eckelman in, and Jessica Mott delivered a two-out single to make the score 2-0. The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Alesandrelli hit a two-out, two-run single to drive in Bates and Eckelman.

The Rams made things exciting in the seventh inning against Crusader pitcher Sophia Roncon (6-13). After Roncon blanked URI over the first six innings, Rhody finally broke through with two outs in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Rachel Zingerman singled to left to bring Jessica Hennelly in. Zingerman and Hannah Hernandez both wound up in scoring position on the play, bringing Kylie Bulinski to the plate as the potential tying run. Bulinski singled to right field, bringing Hernandez and Zingerman around to make it a one-run game.

Becca Zawistowski reached on an infield error that allowed pinch runner Leilyn Alvarez to move to second base and bring Skyler Rapuano to bat, but a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop ended the game as Alvarez was retired at third base.

Game 2 - Rhode Island 2, Holy Cross 2 (6)
Rhody got in front quickly in the second game when Jessica Hennelly drove in Skyler Rapuano with a two-out singled. Rapuano had reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch to set up Hennelly's hit. Hennelly later padded the URI lead when she scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth as Casey Miller reached on an error.

In the bottom of the sixth, Holy Cross got three walks to load the bases. With two outs, Morgan Jensen singled to right field to drive in Olivia Eckelman and Ali Sniegocki to tie the score. A strikeout ended the inning, and the game was called after the sixth inning due to darkness.
