How it Happened
Davidson (22-14, 8-2 Atlantic 10) got a dominant outing from Will Schomberg, who shut down the vaunted Rhode Island offense to lead the Wildcats to a 7-2 win Friday afternoon.
Schomberg scattered three hits and one run over 7.0 innings, as he improved to 6-2 on the season. An
Alex Ramirez home run in the bottom of the third inning accounted for the first run for Rhode Island (16-18, 6-4 Atlantic 10) in the opener.
The visiting Wildcats used a steady attack to build its lead, scoring single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. A two-run single by Jacob Hinderleider in the top of the seventh broke the game open. Two more runs in the top of the ninth sealed the win.
Rhody got one run in the bottom of the ninth when
Rob Butler drove in his brother
Billy Butler with a two-out single, but that was URI could not get any more across. Walks to
Brody McKenzie and Ramirez loaded the bases for
Addison Kopack, but Bennett Flynn got Kopack to line out to center field for the final out.
