How It Happened
Rhode Island rallied from a four-run deficit to score nine unanswered runs and complete a doubleheader sweep of Massachusetts, 9-4, Wednesday afternoon.
Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Rams (18-27-1, 8-11 Atlantic 10) scored nine runs over the next three innings to take control. In the fourth,
Rachel Zingerman walked and got into scoring position by stealing second. With two down,
Skyler Rapuano reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Rapuano broke for second and stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Zingerman to score Rhody's first run.
In the fifth inning,
Jessica Hennelly got things started with a leadoff double, and
Becca Zawistowski followed with a single to left center to drive her in. Later in the inning, with
Emily Power on second and
Cassie Swenson on first, Zingerman lined a two-out triple to right field to drive both runners in and tie the game.
Rhody broke it open in the sixth inning.
Kylie Bulinski led off with a walk, and pinch runner
Mandi Hanewich came on to steal second. Hennelly singled up the middle to bring Hanewich in with the go-ahead run and wound up taking second on the throw. Hennelly moved to third on a wild pitch, and then Zawistowski reached on a fielder's choice in which no outs were recorded. Pinch hitter
Caitlin O'Leary lined a single to right that brought Hennelly in for a 6-4 lead.
The hit parade continued as
Cassie Swenson reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Annabeth Carlberg delivered a pinch-hit single that drove in two more runs. Swenson eventually scored on a wild pitch to cap the rally and give the Rams a five-run cushion.
Massachusetts (14-29, 5-14 A-10) managed to get two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but relief pitcher
Ashley Hibbard did not allow any runs, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings to close out the victory.
