How it Happened
Rhode Island outlasted Fordham 5-4 on Thursday afternoon at Houlihan Park to take the first meeting of a three-game conference set. After Rhody (10-15, 2-2 Atlantic 10) used an early scoring spree to jump out 5-0, the home team clawed its way back into contention with a four-run seventh inning before URI sophomore Ryan Andrade closed the door, earning his fourth save of the year.
URI's offense was powered by the long ball, as Addison Kopack, Anthony DePino and Alex Ramirez each recorded a home run. Kopack was the first to leave the yard, doing so with a blast in the top of the third that drove in Ramirez and put Rhody up 2-0. In the following frame, both DePino and Ramirez got in on the action with a solo and two-run shot, respectively, to push the lead to 5-0.
While Rhode Island chased Fordham's (12-18, 1-3 A-10) starter out in just the fourth inning, Sean Sposato held his ground. The redshirt junior allowed just one hit in his first six frames of work and kept the Rams' offense in check until handing the ball over to Bo Brutti with two runners on in the top of the seventh. After a sacrifice fly and an RBI single allowed Fordham to score its first two runs of the afternoon, Zach Fernandez was called from the bullpen and let up a two-run double before ending the inning with a swinging strikeout, preserving the advantage at 5-4.
Rhody had chances to extend its lead in both the eighth and the ninth, as Billy Butler reached with a single and Calvin McCall drew a walk but the team was unable to plate any insurance runs. On the other side of the ball, Andrade was called upon for the final six outs and did so while working around a baserunner in each of his two innings of work.
Inside the Box Score
- Redshirt junior Sean Sposato earned the win on the mound, improving his season record to 2-3. He pitched 6.1 innings, 6.0 of which were scoreless, and finished the day with four strikeouts.
- With today's big fly, sophomore Anthony DePino is now just one home run away from tying Mark Coley for the team lead (6). Redshirt juniors Addison Kopack (5) and Alex Ramirez (3) are also not far behind.
- Both Ramirez and Kopack contributed two RBI. Ramirez additionally scored a pair of runs, while Kopack was the only Ram to record a two-hit game (2-4).
- Freshman Michael Anderson, redshirt senior Billy Butler and freshman Nicholas Toro also contributed base hits for Rhode Island.
- Redshirt junior Calvin McCall worked two walks and laid out for a web gem in center field to record the first out of the bottom of the ninth.
- All five of the strikeouts that Rhode Island pitchers recorded were swinging.

The series between Rhode Island and Fordham will continue with an 11 a.m. game on Friday, April 7 with the finale set to follow at noon on Saturday, April 8. Friday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Saturday's will be carried on ESPN3.
