How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team was unable to control the Saint Joseph's offense on Friday afternoon, falling 15-3 in the series opener at Smithson Field.
Though Rhody had been first to strike, getting on the board in the opening frame with a two-run shot off the bat of Billy Butler, it was the Rams' (20-25, 10-9 Atlantic 10) only lead of the day as the Hawks (23-20-1, 13-6 A-10) secured their victory with ease.
The SJU bats got going early, scratching nine runs across in three innings and never looked back. A six-run outburst in the fifth and sixth went on to propel the Hawks to their final total, while Michael Anderson's homer in the seventh lifted Rhode Island to three total runs.
Inside the Box Score
- Redshirt-junior Sean Sposato (3-5) was tagged with the loss, as well as eight earned runs. He pitched 2.0 innings before exiting the game.
- Freshmen Colin Maloney and Connor Grotyohann held the Hawks scoreless for two combined innings. Maloney fanned a career-high three batters, while Grotyohann struck out one.
- Redshirt-senior Billy Butler and freshman Michael Anderson finished the game with two hits apiece. Redshirt-sophomore Rob Butler also had a pair of knocks.
- Thanks to the efforts of B. Butler and Anderson, Rhode Island has now recorded at least one home run in five-straight games.
- Redshirt-junior Alex Ramirez extended his reached-base streak to 27 games when he walked in the first inning.
