How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball was walked off by Massachusetts in the bottom of the 10th on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 8-7 result that evened up the series between the teams at 1-1. Rhode Island had led 7-4 heading into the final frame, but was unable to hold on as a four-spot lifted the home team to victory.Â
While the Rams (19-24, 9-8 Atlantic 10) controlled the first half of the game, the Minutemen (11-28, 4-13 Atlantic 10) came through down the stretch. Rhody had built its initial lead early, jumping out 1-0 in the first on a solo shot delivered by
Billy Butler. The team went on to pad its lead in the fifth when
Rob Butler left the yard and
Michael Anderson drove in
Jack Hopko with a double. An additional run, scored on a UMass miscue, pushed the score to 4-0.Â
After being shut out for five innings, the home team got on the board with a double that plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Starter
Trystan Levesque was able to maintain the edge at 4-2, ending the frame with a three-pitch strikeout.Â
The momentum started to shift in favor of Massachusetts following the sixth-inning push. In the bottom of the ninth, a two-run big fly knotted the score up at 4-4 and sent the game into extras. Rhode Island got back on top with a pair of RBI hits from
Rob Butler and
Alex Ramirez, as well as a run scored on the Minutemen's second error of the day, but the Minutemen refused to be put away. A bases-clearing double and a sac fly were the difference in their victory on Earl Lorden Field.
