How It Happened
Rhode Island (22-29-1, 12-12 Atlantic 10) dropped a hard-fought pitcher's duel to Saint Louis, falling 1-0 in the regular-season finale Sunday.
Saint Louis (29-23, 20-5 A-10) got the game's only run in the top of the first. With two outs, Gabbie Kowalik walked and stole second. She came around to score when Abby Mallo singled up the middle.
Rhody had chances to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, but the Billiken defense made two heads-up plays.
Hannah Hernandez led off the inning with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Rachel Zingerman.
Elena Gonzalez lined a single up the middle, but Kowalik threw a strike from centerfield to nab Hernandez at the plate. Gonzalez took second on the play. One batter later,
Kylie Bulinski reached on an error when her grounder got away from the second baseman. Gonzalez, who was off with contact, tried to come around to score, but Saint Louis shortstop Chloe Rhine got the loose ball and fired home just in time to get Gonzalez at the plate.
Rhody got two runners on in the third and fifth inning, but it was unable to get any runs across against a trio of Saint Louis pitchers. Kaili Hanner and Taylor Hochman (4-5) each threw 3.0 shutout innings before Chloe Wendling came on in the seventh to earn her second save of the series.
URI starter
Liz Lynchard (10-13) threw 5.0 strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits. She was relieved by Ashley Hibbert, who provided 2.0 innings of scoreless relief to keep Rhody in the game.
