KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's
Addison Kopack signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday evening.
He is the second Ram to either sign or be drafted by an MLB organization this year, as teammate
Mark Coley was picked up by the Miami Marlins in the 17th round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
One of the most decorated players in program history, Kopack was a true utility man for the Rams whose ability to plug-and-play into any spot in the lineup earned him numerous awards, including ABCA First Team All-Region recognition, an All-New England selection and a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 First Team.
A three-year starter for the Rams, Kopack's prospects were undoubtedly affected by his monster season in 2022. The Rhode Island native led the Atlantic 10 with a .430 batting average, a .925 slugging percentage and a 1.450 OPS in conference play. He matched the single-season record with 60 RBI while recording 17 home runs, the second-most in any campaign.
Kopack was a career .304 hitter and appeared in every spot in the infield, as well as behind the dish and on the mound during his time in Kingston. He checks into Rhode Island's record book in numerous categories, including career home runs (22, fifth), career slugging percentage (.532, seventh), career walks (81, ninth) and career on-base percentage (.407, 10th).
He is the second player in three years to sign as a free agent, joining former teammate Jackson Coutts (Washington Nationals, 2020).
This marks the first time that two Rams have signed or been drafted by MLB teams in a single season since 2017, when both Chris Hess (17th round, New York Yankees) and Martin Figueroa (32nd round, Houston Astros) achieved the feat.
