RHODE ISLAND VS. QUINNIPIAC - SERIES NOTES
  • Rhode Island and Quinnipiac have met four times since the 2001 season, with the Rams winning all four.
  • The last time the teams met was in 2015, a 2-1 victory for URI. Sophomore Ryan Bailey had one goal and one assist, while classmate Dante Lamb added a goal to help Rhody rally for the victory.
  • This is the second consecutive season Rhode Island is opening on the road. Last season, URI began the season with a 4-2 victory at American International.
  • Quinnipiac is the defending MAAC champion and the Bobcats are the preseason favorite to win the title again.
FAMILIAR FACES RETURN TO RHODY LINEUP  
  • Five players who played in all 16 games for Rhode Island last season are back.
  • The players who appeared in every game a year ago are forwards Rafa Villanueva and Isak Oystese; midfielders Kevin Castaneda and Max Kwitchoff; and midfielder Ivan Montoro.
  • Castaneda is the most experienced player in the program with 38 matches to his credit, including 33 starts.
  • Oystese and Montoro have both played in all 33 possible contests since arriving on campus before the 2021 season. Montoro has started 28 matches, while Oystese has 26 career starts.
  • Oystese was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2021, when he had six goals and three assists.
  • He followed that up with three goals last year.
  • Defender Vetle Nilsen has started all 32 contests he has played for the Rams. He was limited to 10 contests in 2022, but he started all 17 matches the year before. 
RODRIGUEZ OFFERS EXPERIENCE IN NET  
  • Goalkeeper Edu Rodriguez transferred to Rhode Island after spending three seasons playing for Campbell in the Big South.
  • Despite having three seasons played, he comes to the Rams with two seasons of eligiblity.
  • Rodriguez led the Camels to a Big South regular-season title in 2022, leading the conference with a 0.81 goals-against average.
  • He ranked 27th nationally in the category.
  • Rodriguez started all 36 matches he played for Campbell, posting a record of 25-6-5.
  • He has a career goals-against average of 0.9 to go with 10 shutouts.
