How It Happened
Rhode Island's season opener ended in a scoreless tie at Quinnipiac Thursday evening.
The Rams appeared to net the lone goal of the match in the 80th minute. A high cross from
Íñigo Etxegarai went from right to left in front of the net, and
Mathias Taylor got a head on the ball, but despite all players on the pitch stopping for a moment, no goal was awarded.
The opening half featured missed opportunities for both sides. In the sixth minute, Etxegarai wiggled his way through multiple defenders in the box and fired a shot to the right of Quinnipiac keeper Karl Netzell, who made a diving save to knock the chance away.
The Rams got a penalty kick in the 26th minute.
Rafa Villanueva sent a cross from the right side, and
Michael Hofstetter drew the foul as he cut through the box. Villanueva took the penalty shot and had Netzell beat, but the ball went off the cross bar and over the end line for a goal kick.
The host Bobcats had a pair of solid chances, as Brage Aasen sent a shot just over the upper right corner of the net in the 10th minute. In the 42nd minute, Quinnipiac's Jason Budhai and Rhody keeper
Edu Rodriguez collided just above the top of the box. Rodriguez was issued a red card and the Bobcats got a free kick. Noe Cabezas' shot went high as the chance went by the boards.
